U20 Ice Blacks hang on to defeat South Africa

The U20 men’s Ice Blacks managed to hold on and beat rival South Africa 3 – 2 in tense and hard fought game. The Kiwi’s netted 2 goals early to take the lead, but an emotional and determined the South Africa team leveled the scores by the end of the first. A scoreless second period saw some great defence from each side, but especially the South Africans who survived a 5 minute penalty kill as Brandon Husselman was sent to the locker room for spearing. With time winding down in the third period, Robyn Vortanov continued his outstanding tournament so far by picking up the rebound, and netting his second of the night. The Kiwi’s held off the South Africans strong play in the final 2 minutes and sealed the victory.

This was one of the best games of the IIHF U20 Division III World Championships so far. Join us Thursday from Dunedin Ice Stadium from 10am when tournament play resumes with Chinese Taipei taking on Iceland.
