Hard Yards For Ice Fernz vs Australia

The Ice Fernz’ third game in the tournament was another hard-fought affair, with their Trans-Tasman rivals Australia taking a 12-1 win.

After two challenging games to start the tournament, NZ came out with a much better start against Australia, keeping a fast pace and defending well. The score held at 0-0 for much of the period, despite both sides having penalties, but Australia was able to get on the board late in the period, adding a second to bring the score after 20 minutes to 2-0.

The Fernz cut the lead in half early in the second period, as Anjali Thakker scored on the powerplay, but penalty trouble continued and led to Australia potting five more goals in the period, to leave the score at 7-1 after 40 minutes.

An early third period goal for Australia saw the Fernz change their goaltender, with Daisy Hopkins coming out and Shelby Wood replacing her. Australia added several more goals on the skater advantage to close out the game 12-1, but the Fernz players and management were proud to see that the Fernz never gave up and continued to press hard.

Best Player for New Zealand was Hope Gregory.
